How to Enjoy our Commute to Work

For The Positive Mind by Joan Healy. ©The Positive Mind.

The start to our working day is very important as it sets up our mood for the day. Sometimes we can be caught up in our daily routine, that we miss out on all the things around us. We can use simple tips to bring some enjoyment to our daily commute to work. So I have prepared some tips on how we can enjoy our commute every day.

  1. Send positive energy to those around us.

On our daily route to work, we become familiar with the same people passing us at the same time every day. We see the same pedestrian at the traffic lights, the same jogger along the path and the same driver all appearing at a similar time on our commute. These people whose paths cross with us pose a great opportunity to spread some positivity. We can smile or nod at these people or simply wish them well in our own way. This connectivity greatly adds to our own happiness.

  1. Be aware of our environment

There are wonderful and beautiful things happening around us when we are open to seeing them. For example, if you travel by public transport, you may enjoy people watching, you may pass by beautiful buildings or spot a wonderful sunrise. There is always something fascinating to see which can bring a sense of wonder to our journey.

  1. Look out for nature

As you are travelling to work, it is nice to briefly notice the sights of nature en route. Some of us are fortunate enough to have some terrific nature on our route to work. From rivers, to parks and flocks of birds in the air, there is always something interesting to see. Watch the seasons paint nature varied colours throughout the year.

  1. Change the route

A change is as good as a rest. If possible, try out a new route to work. This new direction can activate parts of the brain which allow for fresh thinking and we become able to see life in a new way. A little adventure now and then can be quite enjoyable!

  1. Give yourself more time.

It can be very rewarding to slow down with your commute. So in order to avoid frustration at traffic jams or at breakdowns of buses, go to work 5 or 10 minutes earlier than you normally would. This little extra time can make a huge difference to your mood. It can be the difference between arriving to work stressed and arriving relaxed and energised.

  1. Smile!

When we smile at others on our commute, we can watch as they return a smile back to us.

Whether we travel to work by foot, by car or public transport, we can all find a way to add some fun and awareness to our commute. If you have some other tips on how to improve the commute to work, please let us know!
